Guess who got drafted into Baron Banner this year! In addition to his many competitive extracurriculars and a passion for living life, give it up for senior Travis Wu.
Wu’s first exposure to Baron Banner is nothing short of friendship shenanigans. He was drawn to the newspaper after participating as an interviewee for a fellow friend. And still, he enjoys writing, seeing it as a way for remembrance.
“[I’m looking forward to] writing,” Wu said. “Writing can be passed down through generations.”
His journey throughout high school consists of many “drafts” where his band of friends would recruit him to various activities. Among these are three ventures he pursued throughout his academic career: Wu is a member of the eSports team for League of Legends (L.O.L.), the vice president of the Robotics/Engineering Club and a member of the Math Olympiad. However, robotics earns a medal for being his favorite.
“This past summer, [my robotics team] went to Maryland, and that was the first time I left Southern California. It was also the first time I boarded an airplane,” Wu said.
Wu has always been the epitome of an academic weapon—from various community college courses to enrolling in a calculus course that isn’t offered on the Fountain Valley High School campus, Wu has done it all. In his minimal spare time, Wu finds himself — you guessed it — practicing for the eSports team.
If he’s not busy building robots, fighting with his L.O.L. team or solving difficult equations, Wu loses himself in nature, considering it as a possible career path in addition to researching and data science.
“I really like nature,” Wu said. “Animals, wildlife … in the future, I want to travel out [into the world], do research and live in nature.”
Although his answers appear confident and well-rounded, Wu is the type of person who would stumble over his answer to “Who or what inspires you?”
“That’s quite a deep question,” Wu said. “You know those motivational speakers on TikTok? That’s where [I] get motivation.”
His favorite quote?
“I’m part of LinkCrew, and I told a freshman, ‘Make sure to live life to the fullest and don’t go into senior year regretting what you didn’t do’,” Wu said. “That’s a pretty good quote . . . it’s targeting myself.”
