October recognizes accomplished seniors

Each month, the Honors Committee recognizes two seniors who exhibit excellence in academics, leadership, sports, and extra-curricular activities. This October, these two fortunate students both have a strong emphasis on schoolwork and their participation in ASB: Anhdao Uong (‘13) and Paul Do (‘13).

Anhdao Uong, whose score of accomplishments includes two years on administrative ASB, a board position as Spirit Chair of one of Fountain Valley’s largest clubs, Key Club, has a very impressive academic record.

When asked why she believes the Committee selected her for the role, she said, “I didn’t lie on my application. Throughout high school I wanted to be involved, so during Freshman Club Rush I joined a lot of clubs, some of which I didn’t stick with, but I tried to stay active in school.”

As Spirit Chair of Key Club, Uong helps out with big events like Fall Rally and DCon, cheer competitions held annually at Six Flags Amusement Park. She served one year as a Publicity Commissioner for ASB, and she continues working with ASB this year on assemblies and dances.

Uong said, “ASB helped me realize how much it takes to run the school, even on a lower level. It just helps me appreciate our environment so much more.”

In the future, Uong would like to attend college and eventually pursue a career in pediatrics. “I love dealing with kids, and I’ve always wanted to be a doctor,” stated Uong, a role that would fit her exuberant personality and diligent work ethic perfectly.

The other honoree, Paul Do, also praised ASB and clubs as the activities that locked him in as a candidate for the position. After transferring from Texas midway through his high school career, Do quickly assimilated himself into the FVHS community.

In Texas, after playing on the basketball team for two years and placing large emphasis on athletics, Do decided that he would take a completely new route at FVHS.

“I wanted to invest more time in other activities that could really connect me to the school. Coming in completely new, joining Senate, ASB, and clubs helped me feel part of the school, and I want to give back to this community,” Do remarked, attributing most of his success here at FVHS to ASB.

Do thinks that the biggest factor in his maturity and his growth is the responsibility that Executive ASB Council puts on him. “Whenever we put on school events, people remember that ASB put that event together. To support my school and my team, I need to always work efficiently; I think that my position on Executive ASB secured me the role of Senior of the Month.”

Other than student government, Do enjoys spending time as a member of several other on-campus organizations such as the American Heart Association, Friday Night Live, and Key Club.

“Having seen both sides of every event, being an average club member and student and being the ASB member who put in countless hours putting the same event together helps me keep a perspective,” he said.

As for the future, Do does not mention any specific goals he would like to reach. Instead, he lists a much larger claim for his place in a larger society: “I know that I can work towards a goal, but my only ambition is that before I die, the entire world knows my name.”

Do and Uong have worked hard to earn the honor of Senior of the Month, and they will continue to serve their school until they graduate.

Uong said, “I don’t want to brag, but I truly believe that Fountain Valley is the best school out there. We have spirit, athletics, academics, and more. I am so happy to attend here and experience the culture.”
