Tension hung thick in the air last Saturday as the cross-country team battled head to head against rival teams in the Sunset League Finals at Huntington Beach Central Park in hopes of placing in the top three and moving on to CIF. The Barons faced tough competition from some of highest-ranked teams in the county, including Los Alamitos, Marina, and Edison.
Both the boys and girls had worked hard by running over seven hundred miles this summer, and had expected to sweep at this year’s finals.
However, although girls varsity fought hard, their overall efforts proved disappointing and they scored fifth place in the league. The girls made no comment on their race, but have made sure to use it as motivation in order to dominate this year’s track season.
The junior varsity and the frosh-soph teams, on the other hand, ran exceptionally with the JV team achieving first place and frosh-soph running second place overall. Top performances included Laura Resendiz (’16) with a time of 19:31, who had scored second place overall in the fresh soph division with Victoria Miller (’17) right behind her running a 20:00 and placing third.
“Our team did really well,” said Lindsey Roberts (’14) “Varsity has nothing to be ashamed of.”
“JV team got first, fresh soph got second, and the varsity scribbled today,” stated Coach Bivens.
The boys were more satisfied with their performances, with varsity placing first, frosh-soph placing second, and the JV team scoring second in their races.
“On all levels there was a whole bunch of improvement and the goodness of the teams was shown today,” Kenneth Barrios (’15) said.
On Nov. 16, the boys will compete at the CIF Preliminaries at Mt. Sac against teams all across southern California in order to qualify for CIF Finals, and hopefully become the first boys team in FVHS history to move on to state.
