Last week the annual Five Counties Wrestling Tournament took place at FVHS. Five Counties is one of the largest high school tournaments in the country and wrestling community. This year 58 schools packed the FVHS campus to compete.
The year before, Buchanan High School wrestlers from Fresno took home four championship belts in addition to first place.
“So of course we are looking out for [Buchanan High School] but there’s a lot of good teams this year and I can’t say that their is only one team to be worried about,” said wrestling captain Andrew Morgan (’15). “I really think you just have to think about yourself and take it one match at a time.”
This year, Morgan and Blake Vazquez (’16) placed second, Karson Ayres (’17) placed fifth and Stone Escobedo (’15) placed seventh.
“This tournament is really preparing us for CIF, Masters and State, which is what we are really aiming for,” said varsity wrestler Vasquez. “It’s just a stepping stone for what we need to do.”
