In their annual Crush Cancer game, the Barons girls volleyball dominated Newport Harbor, a feat that hadn’t been done in over three years. On top of this, the girls also raised over $1,400 for the Eastman family, a family that is caring for the children of their daughter, Julianne, who recently died of cancer.
“We do this cancer night to feature a family dealing with, or with the effects of cancer each year. We wanted to make sure we raised funds this year for the Eastman family, whose young kids are without a mother and father,” said head coach Becca Turose.
The Barons raised the money through a bake sale and raffle with gift cards that the girls donated. On top of this great accomplishment of raising money, the Barons also delivered a massive blow to Newport Harbor with scores of 18-25, 25-14, 25-22, and 25-17. The Barons had great stats all around the court, but stellar performances were made by Phoebe Minch (’20) with 19 kills, and Kennedy Hood (’17) with 11 blocks.
One of the Baron’s star players, Amy Hinnant (’17) was injured in the first game due to the other team stepping on her foot under the net.
“Why now,” said Kara Winthrop (’17) who went in for Hinnant and stepped up to the challenge getting four kills and being a huge help to the team. The whole team rallied around their injured teammate and played to their max. The momentum of the game after, shifted heavily in the Baron’s favor and they kept their energy level high.
“They served tough, played their defense and stayed aggressive” said Turose.
This can be seen with the Baron’s 18 aces, a great accomplishment in the world of volleyball. Thank you to all of the people who came out to support the Eastman family, and great job to girl’s volleyball for delivering the best win of their season.
