Fountain Valley Girls Soccer went up against the opposing Newport Harbor on Tuesday, January 17, losing with a close score of 1-2 in overtime.
The Barons had come off of a two game losing streak, and started the game off strong with three shots on goal by Kylie Wilson (‘18) and Sandra Hawryla (‘17). The Barons nearly scored a goal, but were unfortunately offsides, turning the ball over to Newport.
The game looked as though it would be a stalemate; both teams had spectacular defense and it looked as though nobody would score. Just then, Kylie Wilson (‘18) drove the ball through two defenders and scored a goal in the top right corner of the goal putting the Barons ahead 1-0.
Newport tried to respond to this goal with one of their own, but their player kicked the ball through the goalposts of the football field instead.
The half ended with Fountain Valley winning 1-0 with four shots on goal opposed to Newport’s two shots.
The Barons started the second half off strong with three great defensive stops by Allison Bebout (‘18) and Karley Duda (‘17) and two saves from goalie Aysia Buendia (‘18). Newport had received three yellow cards in the second half, causing much uproar in the crowd.
Newport, however, broke the second half stalemate with a goal scored from a bad pass on behalf of the Barons. This put Newport back in the game with a score of 1-1. Fountain Valley had two more attempts on goal, but were offsides or lost the ball to the defender.
The game was getting down to the wire, and three clutch saves from Aysia Buendia (‘18) put the game into overtime with a score of 1-1.
The Barons looked as though they had the upper hand by getting a corner kick just three minutes into overtime. They kicked the ball across the net, but a player from Newport headed the ball out of the penalty box, sending it downfield. #24 on Newport Harbor proceeded to dribble the ball through two defenders and even dribbled passed the goalie to score an easy goal. This ended the game in a 1-2 loss for the Barons.
“I really think we need to pick up our scrappy plays, like the last one. And keep practicing to get better,” said Sandra Hawryla (‘17) after the game. The girls are now 0-3 in season and are hoping to get a win against Los Alamitos on Thursday, January 19.
