Writer and swimmer with a crafty side, sophomore Katelynn Luu joined Baron Banner as an opportunity to become more involved in the student culture.

Feeling disconnected from this huge campus, Luu decided to take the leap and apply to the student-run print and publication. With writing being a passion of hers since a young age, Luu is finally able to pursue her childhood dream of being a writer.

Writing is not the only hobby Luu enjoys. She enjoys reading, with the Harry Potter series being one of her favorite books. Luu also loves sewing and knitting, making her dabble in almost everything.

“I really like to sew and [do] arts and [crafts]. I’m really into knitting and I like to make clothes,” Luu said. “In my family, if anyone has a rip or a tear, they’re like, ‘Katelynn, can you fix this?’”

Only in her sophomore year, Luu is excited to meet new people and start conversations. One of her main goals is to spread the message of enjoying high school instead of being hyper focused on the future.

“Since our school is so big, I feel like every class I have different people and I’m excited to make new friends, meet new people [and] hear different perspectives about life,” Luu said.

As mentioned before, Luu is a swimmer, on both a club team and the junior varsity team at Fountain Valley High School.

“I really enjoy swimming because I feel like it is a sport where you compete against yourself rather than other people,” Luu said. “I focus more on improving my times instead of trying to beat others, so it’s nice to have something where I don’t have to compare myself to others and just focus on myself.”

She is also part of a student-run club called South East Asians Learning English, which aims to teach Southeast Asian children how to learn English over Zoom.

“We have [teachers] from all kinds of different schools. We have someone in Michigan, we have people from Troy High School [and] from Huntington Beach High School,” Luu said.

At home, one of Luu’s biggest role models is her older sister.

“She’s a junior this year [and] she has a lot of stuff going on [in her life]. She always has big goals and she works really hard to get to where she wants to be, and whenever I’m struggling with something, she’s always there for me,” Luu said. “She’s just my favorite person ever.”

Hardworking and kind, Luu is ready to go into the year with an open mind, to meet people and to grow.
