Sophomore Kailyn Thai commences her first year at FVHS a part of Baron Banner alongside her love of art.
“I joined because I heard that designers can apply, so I went for it. I’m also usually a quiet person, so I needed something to get myself out of my comfort zone,” says Thai.
Dabbling in both realism and doodling, Kailyn loves drawing. She has been drawing since age three or four and is currently working on illustrations for two Baron Banner articles. She relishes in doodling random drawings at home and school but especially elves, flower crowns, stars, moons, dogs and anything cute.
Thai said, “I’m super passionate about art, nothing else really. [Art] makes projects fun if it includes drawing. I can’t wait for future events in Baron Banner!”
Baron Banner benefits her college applications, and she plans her road to attending the University of California, Irvine and becoming a speech therapist to help people with communication and language. In a funny contrast, her favorite subject in school is math. Kailyn is also currently in art club and plays the piano to also add onto her college application.
Several goals she has for the school year includes procrastinating less and trying to be more focused, as she is easily distracted by music when doing her homework. In fact, Kailyn also intends to learn more K-Pop choreographies, specifically by Seventeen, Monsta X, Blackprint and NCT; however, it is taking forever due to her lack of motivation.
In the midst of graduating school and achieving her dream job, Kailyn desires a trip to South Korea or really, anywhere in Asia for a long needed break.
“I want to learn more about their culture,” says Thai, “I really like the style of Korean beauty so I want to check it out. Mostly though, I want to try the food there (in particular, bibimbap).”
In her free time, she doesn’t watch many Netflix shows but instead takes delight in watching “Spirited Away”, her favorite movie for its creative and unique plot and anime. Instead of doing homework, Kailyn often spends her time on Instagram and its explore page.
Kailyn describes herself as shy and artistic. Her strengths include her supportiveness of her friends and her excellent listening skills. However, her greatest weakness is her indecisiveness and tendency to daydream a lot.
Following the recent summer of 2018, Mimi, Kailyn’s Beagle-Chihuahua, passed away after 15 years from old age. She wishes she could go back in time to inform herself of her dog’s coming death and of her regrets and mistakes. Kailyn hopes to change several things about herself like her control over her emotions.
“I know I said I was quiet, but I’m the opposite with friends and I tend to be a bit too loud. I feel like it makes people think weirdly of me because they meet me being super shy and all,” says Thai.
On the topic of time-travel, Kailyn wants to go back to when she was younger so she could have fun and re-experience her life.
“Last summer I went on a trip to Vietnam after almost a decade. It felt nostalgic in a way and I got to see a lot of relatives there,” says Thai.
One of Kailyn’s favorite things to do include whiffing in the smell of sweet peaches, fruits, lavender, and peppermint. She is looking forward to her birthday this year on Dec. 5, marking her sweet 16. Currently, her greatest achievement is her ability to get ready for school in 15 minutes because she loves hitting the snooze button 100 times. With everything she has been through, Kailyn is extremely grateful for being able to live here in California and a student in Fountain Valley High School.
Her favorite quote, “Negative minds will never give you a positive life,” rings in her mind, reminding her to stay optimistic and persist on. With school just starting, Kailyn Thai is excited to make the most of her year, striving to pass and make it onto another year.
