Andrew Georgy: Sports Editor

Andrew Georgy

From student-athlete to sports manager, sophomore Andrew Georgy passes his knowledge from the field to the newsroom.

Georgy initially joined Baron Banner after it was advertised to his middle school class, he seeing it as the perfect opportunity to pursue his long-time passion for journalism. Since then, athletics has become his favorite genre to write, thus giving him the foundations to become the Sports Editor his sophomore year.

“I like writing opinion [articles], definitely, but mostly sports,” Georgy said, “I think sports games just have this exciting essence.”

The world of sports piqued his interest at an early age. Although he initially only started covering sports in his freshman year to fulfill his article requirements, he quickly fell in love with the competitive, fast-paced style.

“I started getting into sports last year when they were asking for sports articles … and at first, I wanted to get it out of the way, so I just went to all the sports games for the first couple of weeks,” Georgy said. “But then I actually started liking it. So, I started doing it more and more, until I became more experienced at it.”

Through every article composed, he continues to grow as a journalist on the field, also contributing to Fountain Valley’s local magazine Fountain Valley Living by covering news around the community. Georgy not only excels in his writing inside the newsroom, but was recognized for his skills after winning first place for opinion writing at the annual OCJEA (Orange County Journalism Education Association) journalism competition.

Outside of Baron Banner, you can catch him playing soccer and basketball at his church, where he also enjoys going on church retreats, camping and hanging out with his friends. Moreover, he is a big fan of the show The Office, playing video games and spending time with his family, living with just his mom and dad.

This year, Georgy is working toward expanding out of his shell to explore photography, further broadening his journalism skills in Baron Banner. Additionally, in the future he wants to attend a UC college and to land internships. While he is still undecided on his future career, he hopes to apply his journalism expertise wherever he goes.

“I hope even if it’s not a journalism job, then maybe if it could just be research I would also enjoy it,” Georgy said.

Whether bringing his team to victory by creating captivating articles or scoring on the court, he brings energy and is constantly expanding to new horizons. Georgy is always in the game—reporting, dribbling and representing Fountain Valley High School with pride.
