Sophomore Betty Kaldas has always been interested in storytelling, but it wasn’t until she joined Baron Banner that she began to see writing as something she could pursue more seriously.

Last year, Kaldas wanted to join Baron Banner, even after being told it was not a class. Since then, she has been excited about covering news stories and lifestyle features. She enjoys the challenge of researching, editing and presenting both sides of an issue.

“I like writing at night,” Kaldas said. “That’s when I feel most creative.”

Her early experiences in writing come from middle school competitions, but joining Baron Banner allowed her further to expand her skills in a more professional setting. Kaldas says she values editing as much as the writing, as it lets her refine her ideas. She hopes to continue developing her skills in the newsroom.

Although Kaldas acknowledges that making journalism a career can be challenging, she sees it as a path she could follow, even if it ends up being a side career alongside another profession. She is also considering teaching English in the future.

Beyond writing, Kaldas has recently taken on new hobbies. She joined the field hockey team this year, her first time playing the sport, and has been trying to get more involved on campus after describing her freshman year as more reserved. She highly credits her parents, whom she says are her biggest inspiration, for motivating her to have a strong work ethic and encouraging her to try new opportunities.

“My parents have always been hardworking, which motivates me to do the same,” Kaldas said.

When Kaldas isn’t at practice or working on a story, she can often be found at a library, a quiet and comfy place she enjoys for the relaxing atmosphere and the time it gives her to think in peace. She says reading and writing there helps her manage stress and find balance.

Kaldas hopes to take on more stories with Baron Banner and strengthen her writing skills while exploring where journalism might take her.

“Even if writing isn’t my main career, I’d love for it always to be a part of my life,” Kaldas said.
