Whether standing as a witness in the courtroom or traveling across the court, racket in hand, sophomore Katie Smathers brings energy and enthusiasm to all she dedicates herself to.

This year, Smathers joined the Baron Banner staff after her search to become more involved in FVHS school culture. Inspired by published newspapers and online articles, she felt the Baron Banner team would be the perfect fit for her.

In addition to her passion for journalism, Smathers acts as  a witness for the FVHS Mock Trial team. She participates in various types of trial simulations through the club in order to gain experience in law. For this upcoming spring season, she hopes to become even more involved in Mock Trial and is practicing to become an attorney for the team.

“Apart from being [a] witness, I also participated in [acting as a] courtroom artist,” Smathers said. “That was pretty fun. I got to see the perspective in the jury box.”

Courtroom artist is a Mock Trial Competition category that gives artistically skilled students the opportunity to learn how to draw cartoon scenes of their school’s courtroom.

Smathers is also a member of the FVHS Girls’ Frosh Tennis team. After receiving advice from her older sister, she decided to pursue the sport as a new passion and extracurricular.

Even as a sophomore, Smathers is extremely involved in numerous clubs on campus. She admits that her busy schedule can be demanding, often taking up much of her free time.

“Honestly, it can be overwhelming because I have to stay back a lot,” Smathers said. “Sometimes, I won’t go home until six.”

But despite her late arrivals, she continues to improve her time management and find a balance between her extracurricular activities and her academics.

In her freetime, Smathers indulges herself in art, drawing numerous types of images. She also has a passion for music and began taking drum lessons this past year. She plays a variety of genres, but mostly focuses on the indie rock style of music.

One person who inspires Smathers is her older sister. Though separated by a large age gap, she continues to enjoy the simple moments with her sister when she is home from college.

“‘Whenerver she stops by, it’s really fun,” Smathers said., “It’s kinda like having your own sleepover. She takes me on side quests and it’s honestly cool because she buys me stuff.”

From the courtroom to the tennis court, Smathers is passionate in all that she does. She exudes passion and enthusiasm in every activity she sets her mind to. With her energy and passion to explore, Smathers is an asset to the FVHS community.
