No matter the time or place, sophomore Rebecca Do shines bright.

While Do joined Baron Banner as a writer due to an interest in writing and reading, she has had genuine interest in those activities long before joining Baron Banner. Her interests are broad, ranging from watching shows she likes, to playing the piano and other instruments, to keeping up with politics and to scientific topics.

“Currently, I’m really interested in astrophysics books,” Do said. “Right now, I’m reading books written by Neil Degrasse Tyson and Steven Hawkings, mainly.”

Do has a natural curiosity about the natural world that led her to want to learn more about what’s outside space. She wants to know more about what is really out there and not what sci-fi movies seem to think.

“I want to become an astrophysicist,” Do said. “I was interested in stuff in stuff outside the natural confines of earth [and] I just feel like space genuinely won’t make sense without the science and math behind it so that’s why I become interested [in astrophysiology].”

When Do is not reading or writing, she enjoys playing instruments, such as the piano, and watching figure skating.

“I discovered [figure skating] through [watching the] Pyeongchang Olympics,” Do said. “Gradually I started to learn more about figure skating and I found my two favorite [figure skaters] right now, Yuna Kim and Yuzuru Hanyu.”

After having her first year of high school completely online due to COVID-19, Do is excited to be back and experiencing her first year in person.

“I want to be more involved in my clubs [this year],” Do said. “I did join three clubs last year, but I was only involved in [Model United Nations].”

Despite being just a sophomore Do is already involved in school. Outside of Baron Banner and her clubs, Do is also involved in band, which she decided to join due to early musical influences.

“I’ve played the saxophone in middle school. My dad really liked listening to the saxophone…and I feel like most of my earliest childhood memories [are of the saxophone],” Do said. “[But] I realized I was really uncoordinated with everyone else … so I’ve been playing the synthesizer [since front ensemble needed extra members].”

With her sophomore year just starting, Do seems to have a bright future ahead.
