Senior Uy Pham’s striking authenticity and dedication are the first things you notice when he walks into the room. His many accomplishments are not to be underestimated.
Besides being editor-in-chief of Baron Banner, Pham is co-president of Mock Trial and captain of the defense team, student adviser for Model United Nations and recycling director of Ecology Club. Between all of these commitments, he still makes time to de-stress by socializing, reading, playing chess or taking a nap.
Outside of school, he collects Funko Pops from the Avengers, Harry Potter or any of his past interests. Pham also stays connected to current events through a variety of news sites.
Motivation comes to Pham when he knows his efforts are being put towards an important goal since he strives to find meaning and passion in his activities. Often described as responsible, he isn’t afraid to be outspoken and advocate for himself and those around him.
“I think it’s important to be accountable and [be] able to express your voice because if you don’t speak up, your voice is personally never heard,” Pham said.
Furthermore, Pham holds a strong belief that your actions speak louder than words. They can determine your personality or integrity, even when done subconsciously. This mindset has guided him to consistently turn his ideas into tangible actions as he leads Baron Banner.
Throughout high school, Pham has become more involved on campus, building the confidence to use his voice for the better. Discussing topics with teachers and peers, interviewing members of the school board and writing articles revealing hidden truths, all things he couldn’t imagine doing freshman year.
From these experiences, Pham’s worldview changed as well. He realized that there will always be hardships and obstacles that are simply not up to you.
“It matters what effort you put into things you can control … It matters what you’re able to accomplish, things you can be proud of, like real decisions you make for yourself and others … rather than the uncontrollable things,” Pham said.
When asked what advice he’d give someone who switched bodies with him, Pham put it simply: don’t be afraid to speak up.
Ultimately, his legacy echoes the sentiments of a person who never gave in to the pressures that surrounded him, a goal-getter and someone who will continue to advocate for the things that need to be done.
