As schools shifted back to the classroom, junior Zander Sherry joined the Baron Banner staff as a photographer. He credits his recent interest in photography for joining the class.
“I have had a recent interest in photography,” Sherry said. “As well as visual depictions and interpretations of what we see on the street and what we see throughout life.”
Sherry previously lived in Dubuque, Iowa, where he spent his elementary years, before moving to California.
He described life in Iowa as “definitely different.”
“I feel like after moving to California, there’s a lot more to take in,” Sherry said.
Sherry is interested in majoring in photojournalism, if his time in Baron Banner goes well, or engineering, as he says he enjoys mathematics and physics. However, he is still undecided on his college plans.
His passion is biking, as he bikes to school every day, and he used to participate in activities like swimming, tennis and martial arts at the Young Men’s Christian Association, YMCA. However, he did not keep up with those activities.
“Mostly due to interest,” Sherry said. “I didn’t feel like I had the dedication to put myself through something that physical.”
While Sherry has moved away from extracurricular activities, he describes himself as very academic-minded.
“I put myself through hard classes,” Sherry said, “Just so I can lean on support from my friends, teachers and parents. And I believe that’s what school is all about.”
He also credits Advanced Placement (AP) Human Geography, a course he took freshman year, for opening himself to the high school experience.
“I’ve also done an AP Human Geography course,” he said, “During my freshman year of high school and that really opened me up to the high school AP experience.”
Sherry’s focus on academics and great work ethic help build the foundation for his later successes in life.
