On Friday, Oct. 13, the cafeteria sold grilled hamburgers and cheeseburgers for all students during lunch.
The hamburgers were sold at the regular combo meal price, $3.50. Free or reduced lunch discounts were still effective.
Head of Cafeteria, Carmen Murphy did this last year as a special occasion for seniors who were soon to be graduating. She did it this year because she thought it was nice for students to get a break from the everyday food items sold from the cafeteria during lunch.
“Last time I did it, I did it for my seniors. They were going to graduate, so I was thinking, ‘Oh, this year for the freshmen, the incoming freshmen so [that] they can see what we do here,” said Murphy.
Her goal is to do it once a month, but no set schedule has been created yet. However, setting up, preparing and executing the barbecue takes lots of strenuous work.
In order for one to receive their completed burger, there were three different stations they had to go through. First, there was a line to pay for the burger where one received two buns. Then there was another line to get the patty. If one preferred to have their burger plain, they were free to go. However, if a person wanted condiments, they had to go into the cafeteria to the condiment bar.
Next time, Murphy hopes to put balloons up and play some music to make the barbeque even more enjoyable.
“[It’s] something different, you know not every day they come to the same [cafeteria food]. [It’s] something different and I love the smell of the barbecue,” said Murphy.
