The Fountain Valley High School girls’ tennis team faced off against Marina High School on Tuesday, finishing with a dominant Barons victory of 18-0 in their first league game of the season.
The doubles were led by their number-one lineup: senior Katelyn Nguyen and junior Kendra Ly. Their doubles two lineup consisted of senior Katie Lam and sophomore Kacie Lam, and doubles three comprised of senior Athena Tran and junior Sophia Do.
The three pairs fought hard and secured victories in all three rounds, kickstarting the doubles to an unbeatable start.
Notably, junior Kendra Ly subbed out in the third round, allowing freshman Gwendolyn Nguyen to step in and finish the match
“I think we did the best we could, we definitely had the results. I think we were able to have a lot of good teamwork and overall energy which makes sense being the first game of the season,” co-captain Katelyn Nguyen said. “My partner got subbed out but we still kept that energy going even though it’s been a long day.”
Throughout the game, a cohesive connection between blood-related doubles pair Kacie Lam and Kacie Lam dominated the courts. With their constant communication, effective net play and consistency, the pair secured key victories for the Barons
“Honestly, for me, it’s also the chemistry because I play with my sister. It can be a little crazy, but I think we make it work,” co-captain Katie Lam said.
In the singles matches, junior Chloe Vu was positioned in number one singles, securing a win for rounds one and two with the scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Subbing in for Vu in the third round, freshman Minnie Trang-Le secured the final win of the match.
In singles lineup two, Jaslyn Nguyen won her first two rounds with the scores of 6-0 and 6-2. Subbed out by senior Sophia Duong in the third round, the Lady Barons finished off the matchup with a score of 6-0.
For singles three freshman Gabriela Buhnia played all three rounds securing dominating victories with the scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0 respectively.
The girls’ next opponents will be away against the Los Alamitos High School Griffins on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
