After picking up a golf club for the first time as a freshman, junior Ethan Lam has already made a name for himself in the competitive world of high school and junior golf. While most freshmen are adjusting to high school, Lam was stepping onto the green and into the varsity golf spotlight. Now two years later, Lam transformed a casual outing with a friend into a dedicated pursuit of excellence, racking up wins and recognition along the way.

Lam first got into golf at the start of his freshman year, due to a middle school friend who invited him out for a round.

“I found it pretty fun,” Lam said. “So I decided to take it to the next level.”

Since then, his dedication turned into daily practice routines, whether it’s hitting the driving range or fine-tuning his short game.

In just two years, Lam has secured multiple tournament wins and earned a spot on the varsity team as a freshman—an accomplishment that many seasoned players take years to achieve.

Today, Lam rotates between the number 1 and number 2 lineup positions on the varsity team and has made a significant impact on its success. He dedicates a lot of time to the sport and is especially proud of participating in multi-day tournaments, which he believes test his mental strength and consistency, and getting to interact with college coaches.

“I think my biggest accomplishment as a junior golfer is being able to win and compete against others who’ve been playing longer,” Lam said.

Being part of the Fountain Valley High School golf team has not only sharpened Lam’s skills but also introduced him to strategies and techniques that continue to shape his game. While he doesn’t name a specific role model, Lam looks up to his peers as inspiration for his own path.

“The team has helped evolve my game,” Lam said.

With support from his teammates, coaches, and family, Lam’s sights are now set on maintaining consistency throughout the rest of his season, continuing to grow as a competitive golfer.
