From traveling worldwide to earning countless accolades, junior Alex Nguyen has etched a name for himself in the karate world.

Nguyen began his karate career at the age of five for self-defense purposes, but overtime, the greatest rewards of his sport go far beyond medals. From traveling the world to experiencing new cultures, Nguyen has been able to learn new techniques and make new friends cultivating a new love for his sport.

Nguyen represented Team USA in the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile marking an incredible milestone in his karate career. The experience brought many firsts including traveling outside of the U.S. and being a part of the national team. Nguyen competed against over 25 countries and ultimately came home with a silver medal symbolizing his hard work. The most memorable moment of his experience was hearing his team chant his name in the crowds.

“It really boosts your morale,” Nguyen said. “It’s like a family away from home.”

That sense of belonging fuels Nguyen’s motivation not just to compete, but to inspire. His long-term goal? To put his name and his sport on a bigger stage.

“My goal is to spread and [give karate] a name, and hopefully, maybe, Olympics 2032?” Nguyen said.

But behind the silver lining, Nguyen had to face his biggest challenge yet, an ACL tear that robbed him of most of his mobility forcing him to reshape his training process.

“When I first got it, I couldn’t move my leg,” Nguyen said. “I wasn’t able to do the dynamic movements I usually would. I had to go back to the drawing board and figure out ways to move that wouldn’t hurt me. Revising all my footwork and movement plans, that was hard.”

But despite every challenge thrown at him, Nguyen rose to the occasion and evolved into a stronger athlete both physically and mentally.

Despite his hardships and struggles, Nguyen has still managed to succeed in his endeavors and continues to train tirelessly for his dreams. Now, he has a message for others who might be walking that same path.

“Just keep doing what you’re doing. I kind of [got] teased a lot back then for doing karate, but I’m glad … I stuck with it,” Nguyen said.

From small beginnings to international success, Nguyen’s journey proves that resilience, passion, and self-belief can kick down even the toughest barriers.
