Letters to the Editor: Single and surviving Valentine’s day

The following letter was submitted in response to the opinion article, “Sophomore Advice: Valentine’s Day for Singles,” published in Baron Banner’s February 2018 newspaper. The article offers humorous advice for students navigating Valentine’s Day while single and emphasized the value of independence and making the most of the day regardless of relationship status.

Dear Editor,

I really enjoyed reading the “Sophomore Advice: Valentine’s Day for Singles” section in the Baron Banner newspaper. I loved the formatting and how you gave each SAT team member an adjective that matched with their name. The advice they gave also matched with that adjective (describing their personality, I assume) as well, which I found very amusing! I especially liked the part in Judgy John’s section where he advises readers to “Cry. Cry your heart out and soul out. Crying is okay on this day, because you’ve already accepted the fact you’re most likely lonely and will always be.” I found this to be super funny and somewhat relatable, although most of us probably just internally cry at our loneliness. I liked this part because it made me think of school, of all the times school has made us suffer, mentally, physically, emotionally, and of all the times we cry (well, I say I cry but I don’t actually physically cry) to relieve our pains. Yes, it made me think of that and I found it very funny. I also like how in the other advices from the other SAT team members, everyone was supportive of being single. I realized that even though this was made as a source of entertainment, it also promotes the idea that you don’t need another person to be complete. All you need is yourself and that’s enough. Yes, I also agree with Judgy John. “I’m single and proud of it.” If people who really did want advice read this, I’m sure this would have lightened up their lonely Valentine’s Day and given them more positive thoughts concerning their social state of being single. Thank you for your work!
