Roaming reporter: is AI generated art actually art?

By Nathalie Attya

When photography first emerged, painters declared it the death of painting. Today, A.I. faces the same trial with students using it more and more instead of creating art themselves, forcing us to draw the line between where the artist ends, and the tool begins.

What do our Barons think about this? Let’s walk around and ask students for their opinions!

AILENY MEDINA

“I do not think it’s ethical, and I do not think it’s art because it’s not original, and it’s not made from a person,” senior Aileny Medina said.

HELENA HO

“I think AI-generated art is not actually art because it’s taking people’s work and time and just completely copying it to generate an image with zero effort and just stealing their work basically,” junior Helena Ho said.

VICTOR HARO

“No, AI isn’t real art because when the AI makes its images, it doesn’t use real human emotions and experiences, and it samples real human art that has already been made,” sophomore Victor Haro said.

BRIAN NGUYEN AND OWEN LAMBERT

“No. I do not think that is art. Because it’s not a real person drawing,” freshman Brian Nguyen said.

“Yeah, it’s not real, and it’s just not authentic. You know, you could just tell it to make anything, generate anything,” freshman Owen Lampert said.
