Enthusiastic students toiling away at laborious tasks, the smell of fresh mulch filling the air, newly planted seedlings and trees decorating the scenery: these are all descriptions that make up School Beautification, also known as Pride Day, which took place on March 24, 2012 from 8:00-12:00.
The event was sponsored by Angelus Block Co., The Huntington Garden Center, Mission Landscape Services Inc., Tierra Verde Landscape Inc., and Village Nurseries. Many clubs, institutions, those who are attending Saturday School, and those who are looking for a little extra credit all came down to rejuvenate our school campus. In those four hours, students are seen watering plants, planting new saplings, weeding old soil, and shoveling dirt and mulch.
Even while it seems like tedious work, many students have little complained about volunteering at Pride Day. It seems like the volunteers didn’t mind the hard work and always kept a smile on their face.
“I’m happy to be a part of [Pride Day] because students spend so much time at FVHS,” says Kyle Le (’12), “We have to take care of our school because it’s like a second home for most of us.”
Yes, they say nothing is better than work to get some sweat on your brow and hairs on your chest. Many students quite enjoyed Pride Day because of its impact, and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up a shovel if it meant enhancing a school to be proud of.
“What makes Pride Day so enjoyable is all the work you put on that day and coming back on Monday at school to see all your hard work has paid off,” says Phelan Phan (’13).
Maybe that’s why this event is named Pride Day.
