The Fountain Valley boys proved their dominance over Los Alamitos January 11 at home for their third sunset league game with a 59-47 victory.
The theme of the game was “Silent Night.” Students were encouraged to stay quiet until the tenth point of the game, after which they could cheer all they wanted.
Although neither of the bleachers on each side were filled completely, as hoped, the night’s turnout was the most out of all the league games so far. Many students came in preparation for the upcoming dance, and in hopes of seeing Mr. Arnold’s school be crushed by the mighty Barons.
The FVHS crowd waited patiently for the 10th point of the game, but it didn’t come early as hoped. The possibility of a win looked slim in the first quarter of the game with Los Alamitos playing a tight defense and leading 9-8.
Then, with a free throw by Josh Armstrong (’13), the requisite ten points were made and the crowd roared to life. Snow-like confetti fluttered everywhere, fulfilling the promise that it would “snow” at the game tonight. And just like that, it didn’t take long for FV to reap back the lead from Los Alamitos.
The Barons finished the first half one point over Los Alamitos, 22-21. Los Alamitos continued to lose the ball to Fountain Valley and Jackson Gatlin (’13) harvested the ball straight from the baskets.
Los Alamitos gave into the pressure and got into some serious foul trouble for four consecutive possessions at the end of the game. Sealing the Los Alamitos Griffins’ fate with free throws, Fountain Valley emerged victorious with 59-47.
Notable players of the game include Jackson Gatlin, who wrested 26 rebounds throughout the game, a season-high for him. Josh Armstrong also lead the Barons in scoring with 23 points, and Tanner Trounce (’13) with 11.
The Barons will continue onto Edison on January 16.
