The Girls’ Water Polo team played their last game last Wednesday at Newport Harbor High School, ending their season with an overall tally of 4-18.
Although their performances have left much room for improvement, they are very proud of their success as a team and their ability to build a strong group of players from students with little to no experience.
The team will say goodbye to several of their prized players, such as Kaitlyn Ramirez (‘13), Rachel Christiansen (‘13) and Sandy Niemczyk (‘13).
Team Captain Meredith Lightbody (‘14), one of the few experienced players who will still remain on the team for another year, shares, ‘I’ll miss their personalities and playing styles the most. I’ve been playing with them for three years and it will be weird to play without them. I’ll miss them a lot next year!”
However, her longing for her old friends will not get in the way of developing a stronger team for next year. Girls water polo struggled earlier this year to even compile a team.
For next year, Lightbody notes, “We should greatly improve from this past season. We have 9 months to get in shape, learn, and progress our skills.”
Such an optimistic attitude will definitely help the team grow and improve over the summer.
According to Lightbody, “We plan to return to the school year as a completely different group of girls!”
