The Sunset League Championship last Wednesday concluded a season of improvement for FVHS surf team, whose surfers scored high in this final competition.
“It was really fun and better than last year,” said Colleen Millican (’14). “We definitely got more points as a team, we won more and were individually progressing, too.”
Fountain Valley placed third overall–surpassing Marina–and took home trophies in men’s longboard, women’s longboard, women’s shortboard and bodyboarding.
“We did well last year, and I think we did better this year—we’re always striving to get better,” said Coach David Rorden.
Official standings for first and second place are to be determined by a tie-breaker between Huntington Beach and Edison.
Competitors started at 7 a.m. in the brisk winter waters south of Huntington Beach Pier and surfed until dusk.
Competition was fierce as surfers tried their best to reserve a place in the finals.
“Huntington and Edison are really hard to compete against, but I think we did really well,” said Ian Hunter (’14).
Representing Fountain Valley in the finals were Aly Johns (‘17), Millican (‘14) and Hunter (’14).
Millican placed reached fourth in women’s longboard while Johns placed sixth in women’s shortboard and Hunter received sixth in men’s longboard.
Barons Cody Sizemore (’14) and Sasha Davis (’14) placed first and third in the bodyboarding heat.
Even though the season is over the team will not stop working hard; competition is only a minor component of surfing.
“The cool thing about surfing is you’re not surfing the whole time,” said Riley Donohoo (’16). “When we’re out there waiting for waves we’re out there just talking and having fun.”
Great work to the surf team!!
