Boys varsity soccer came out on top against Santa Ana with a score of 2-0, scoring late in the game but just in time to take home the victory.
The Barons dominated the game against the number two CIF ranked opponents, fluidly passing the balls and carving out scoring opportunities while limiting the opposition’s chances to score.
Late in the first half, forward Zachary Young (’17) had a goal disallowed because of an offside call from the referee. Andrew Rubio (’16) also came close, having a shot from close range deflected away.
The Santa Ana defenders rarely threatened the Barons goal, but goalkeeper Slater Kucera (’17) made quick saves to prevent an opposing goal. Matt Faris (’17), captain Ryan Erickson (’16) and Joey Nguyen (’17) were solid in defense and secured the shutout.
“Santa Ana is a good team and we beat them so that means that’s a good thing for the future and we gotta build on that and be better” said Erickson.
As the game was winding down, the Barons started pushing for a goal that would allow them to win the game. With this determination and 12 minutes left on the clock, Erickson latched onto a good cross and managed to tap the ball home. Young would clinch the game three minutes later, scoring with a thumping header after David Volkert (’16) selflessly crossed across the goal to a wide-open Young.
“Everyone played really well. Everyone worked hard, and it showed in the result… we gotta build on it, not stop, keep working. Go to practice and all that good stuff, and hopefully get some more wins in the future” said Erickson.
