As you scroll on Instagram, you typically see hundreds of perfectly curated posts. Everything from the song to the way the photos are sorted makes everyone seem like they are living the perfect life. That is, until you see their posts on their spam account.
An Instagram spam account, commonly known as a “finsta,” is an account where people post only for their “closest” friends. Posts on these accounts include photos that aren’t “main-worthy” or wouldn’t fit their profile aesthetic.
It’s a switch from their “main” account, where they post exactly how they want to be seen, allowing them to post their true self without fear.
While people post rants, unique hobbies and authentic photos from their daily life on their spam accounts, main accounts are used only to showcase their highlights, ranging from travels to picture-perfect outfit photos.
However, the concept of a spam account and what it’s used for isn’t the problem. That issue would lie in the need to be seen as perfect on Instagram. In fact, for a social media platform, not many people use their accounts to share content.
So the question is, why are we so obsessed with posting the perfect version of ourselves? Why do we care so much about whether or not the song matches the photo?
The truth is, as humans, we care so much about feeling validated by others, and for many, that validation starts online. We make sure that how we are perceived online is flawless to get our self-esteem boost.
However, we shouldn’t only be our true selves on our spam, we should be it all the time. People shouldn’t know us just by our one Instagram highlight. They should feel our real selves through the screen and feel as if they are laughing right there with you.
If our followers know us in person anyway, what’s the need for a spam account? We should be our authentic selves all the time, and let’s start with posting what you would on a spam account to your main account.
