Ever since the 90s when ‘N Sync and The Backstreet Boys were the “it” factor, boy bands seemed to have vanished. Some bands have tried, but were never at the level that ‘N Sync and The Backstreet boys were at. Boy bands are making a comeback and are slowly, but surely, becoming the new fad.
Big Time Rush, a Nickelodeon band, started out as a comedy show for kids. With its growing popularity, the band released their first CD last October and is planning to release their second this November. Over this past summer, the band toured the United States and some parts of Europe. Their sold-outs concerts were packed with thousands of adoring fans. Not only does Big Time Rush attract kids, their fans include fanatic teenage girls, adults, boys of all ages, and parents. Their music is pop, but the new album has taken on a new sound adding techno, rock, rap, and other genres into their music.
A British-Irish boy band called One Direction is slowly climbing the charts and becoming popular in the US. The boys in One Direction didn’t start out as a boy band. Each of the five members entered the British show, The X-Factor, as soloists. However, when they did not qualify for the boys’ category of the competition, a judge suggested that they come together and make a boy band. One Direction finished the competition and took third place. They’ve released covers of songs and recently released an original song, What Makes You Beautiful. Their single was released to YouTube only 2 months ago, but has gotten nearly 17 million views. This British-Irish band is finding its way to every teenage girl’s playlist worldwide.
Boy bands are finally making a comeback. Big Time Rush and One Direction are only two of the many boy bands out there. Watch out for when boy bands take over the music industry again!
