Last Tuesday, FVHS wrestling went against Marina in their last duel which determined who would became Sunset League champions. The standings in the league before the duel left both FVHS and Marina undefeated.
FVHS started out strong as wrestlers such as Ben Madrid (‘15), Alex Damschen (’15) and Bryant Vasquez (’14) pinning their opponents with the beginning of their matches after the matches started setting the pace for the baron. The Barons went on to win a total of eight out of their fourteen matches to win against with a score of 41 to 33. Notable wrestlers who won include Madrid, Damschen, Vasquez (’14), Carson Ayres (‘17), Kyle Knoke (‘15), David Galdamez (‘15), Blake Vasquez(‘16), and Andrew Morgan (‘15).
“The kids wrestled tough,” said head coach Brad Woodbury.
“Tonight was awesome. We kind of did bad at the end, but we pulled through,” said Vasquez (‘14). With this win, the Barons managed to snag another Sunset League Championship and manage an undefeated season and move onto Sunset League Finals.
The finals took place at Newport Harbor High School the following Thursday where varsity wrestled it out to see who will move onto CIF. The Barons wrestled hard and managed to place 11 wrestlers in the top 3 in different weight classes and also place first in team score overall. These wrestlers will move onto CIF next to battle for places in Master then the State meet.
“Our goal is CIF and we’re already [Sunset League champions], so we are doing pretty good,” said Knoke. Wrestlers who placed top 10 included Lolo Gomez (’17), Ayres, Knoke, Galdamez, Vasquez (’16), Morgan, Quentin Gomez (’14), Madrid, and Vasquez (’14).
“We have a chance to win CIF, we just wrestled tough, [there’s] just a few things that we need to do,” said Vasquez (‘14).
