On March 7, Fountain Valley took part in the annual HBUHSD Art Show at the district office. By the end of the night, Fountain Valley took home two Best in Show medals, two Judge’s Choice medals, and multiple Medals of Distinction.
The styles of art included paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures, and other various three-dimensional and two-dimensional pieces art from students all across the district. The pieces selected for the show were displayed in several rooms at the district office.
“It was great to see everyone’s artwork and the amount of time and dedication everyone put into their work,” said Ethelynn Hong (‘14). Hong’s three-dimensional piece, an elegant dress made from newspaper, earned her the two Judge’s Choice medals; and the piece was prominently displayed at the front lobby of the building.
Three Best in Show medals were awarded at the event—in three-dimensional art and two-dimensional art. Also, two Judges’ Choice medals, along with Medals of Distinction, were awarded by judges. Teachers also award medals to students who they feel deserve them.
“It varies every year, but our school tends to do very well… Every year for 3D we do decently, and then it is hit-and-miss for 2D depending on the judging each year,” said art teacher JoAnna Jones.
This year, Adam Van Lieshout (‘14) and Lizzie Lignan (‘14) were awarded Best of Show medals for their artwork. Van Lieshout won for his three-dimensional piece “Lay Waste,” and Lignan for her black and white photo “Treelight.”
“Fountain Valley blows it away every year,” said Ian McKibben (‘14). Medals of Distinction were also awarded to Cory Magill (‘16), Amber Bragdon (‘14), Quan Le (‘15), Julie Brashear (‘14), Kaitlyn Hancock (‘15), Khoi Nguyen (‘14) and McKibben.
The artwork will stay in the district office until April 7, where it will then go to the Huntington Beach Art Center to be featured with the entries selected for the Imagination Celebration.
