The water polo team won three out of the five games in their tournament; two on Friday at Western High School and three on Saturday at Katella High School. They beat Magnolia High School 15-5, El Capitan by a score of 6-3, and finished the tournament with a 9-3 victory over El Rancho.
The team has been practicing since the second week of the school year. The varsity squad has had many early morning practices, including both workouts in the weight room and pool, as well as practice in the pool after school.
“We have improved so much since last year, so I think that all of us are really ecstatic about how well we did in the tournament. It’s something we can build upon and learn from going into our league games,” said senior Kayla Borack (’16).
A few weeks ago, the varsity team was defeated against Los Amigos high school. However, this year they were able to dominate them by a score of 13-2. Earlier in the season they also lost to El Rancho, but during the tournament they beat them 9-3, which was the same same score they were previously beat by.
It goes to show that teamwork and dedication can really bring forth improvement.
“My hopes for the rest of the season are for all of us to improve as a team and put forth our best effort in every game we play,” said Borack.
The team has won quite a few games this season so far. They played one of the toughest leagues in the state, against teams such as Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor, which ranked among the top ten teams in Orange County.
“We have done a lot of conditioning in preseason in order to prepare for challenging games. I feel that if we all work together, have a positive attitude, and put our best foot forward, we can really excel…Water polo is a tough, physical sport, but it also takes mental toughness in order to succeed,” said Borack.
