This year, Senior Commission has decided to organize a senior cruise instead of the regular Sadie’s Dance.

The senior cruise will consist of a three hour dance party in Newport Harbor and will take place on Saturday, June 4, the day after senior finals and the last weekend before graduation.  Activities planned include a DJ, dance floor, photo booth on the main deck, a karaoke station on the second deck, and possibly more events with fundraising.

It will cost $20 for students who purchase tickets early, but the ticket prices will increase as the event draws closer.  The ship that it will be on is the the Catalina Flyer in Newport Harbor. The Catalina Flyer is a 120 foot, three story ship that takes passengers back and forth between Newport and Catalina Island during daytime hours.

They originally got the idea from Brenna Jimenez-Orr at Marina High School.  All members of Senior Commission agreed that they wanted to do something big and different for the 50th graduating class and create a new tradition for the next years of seniors.  They have been planning this event since September and have been fundraising for it through pajama sales, various dine outs, t-shirt sales, as well as individual donations.

“When we were presented with this option, we knew it would take a lot of work, but all agreed that as the 50th graduating class, it was time to take a risk and begin a new tradition,” said Elise Kuykendall, Senior Commission adviser.
