This Tuesday, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) girls’ varsity basketball team was victorious against the Marina Vikings, with the ending score of 39-35. While both teams put up a good fight, the Lady Barons pushed forward and secured their win.
The game started off with the Viking’s tip-off, quickly leading to a successful free throw by senior Kristen Ho. After a period of both teams struggling to score, Ho pushed past the Vikings scoring a two-pointer and three-pointer, back to back. Key defensive plays were made by senior Caitlin Okawa throughout the first quarter. Junior Audrey Tengan closed out the quarter with a two-pointer, leaving the score at 12-10 for the Barons.
The second quarter started off with a score by #10, who showed good offensive skill throughout the entirety of the game. The Barons were able to maintain possession and continously got rebounds, they struggled to score for the first half of the quarter. But yet again, Ho bounced back and scored a three-pointer, and Audrey Tengan followed with another. But after two back-to-back three-pointers by Marina, the quarter ended with a 21-21.
The Barons came in hot, determined to break away from their deadheat. Junior Margaret Tengan started off the quarter with a two-pointer, and the Barons were off. The Barons secured rebound after rebound, demonstrating the excellent communication of the whole team. With Ho and Margaret Tengan leading offensively, and Okawa’s assists, the Barons ended the third quarter with a 9 point lead, the largest margain of the whole game.
In fourth quarter started, and the Vikings came in aggressive, scoring three-point after three-point, slowing closing the gap. Key players senior Mylinh (Enya) Nguyen and sophomore Mary Nguyen fought hard to maintain their defense. After many fouls on both sides, and the clock winding down, it seemed like it could go either way. But the Barons pulled through, holding on to their win with the final score of 39-35.
The Lady Barons play their next home game on April 27th at 7 p.m. against Corona Del Mar High School.
