FVHS track and field falls short against Los Alamitos Griffins

The Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) track and field team competed in a home meet against Los Alamitos High School (LAHS) on Wednesday, Mar. 25. The Barons won the majority of the events that took place for both boys and girls on all three levels, but struggled to maintain first place. Girls’ varsity ended with a total score of 51-71 and boys tied with a score of 68-68.

BOYS

The meet began with the varsity boys 4×100 meter relays. The Barons dominated the track, with senior Roger Wang, junior Badr Farag, senior Mason Snook and junior Grant Wilson racing with a time of 43.71. Their visible strength and effort on the track paid off, as they beat their Griffin opponents by three seconds. After the 4×100 meter relay came the 1600 meter run. Despite their hard effort and determination, the Barons came in second to William Lieras of LAHS, falling behind by just two seconds. From the Barons, sophomore Ulysses Rios took second place with a time of 4:35.67 while senior Empire Vo-Courtney took fourth with 4:36.42. 

Following the relays and 1600 came the 110-meter hurdles, where the Barons not only took first but second as well. The first place taker was sophomore Ethan Nguyen with a time of 16:16, while senior Noah Nguyen took second place. After the 110-meter hurdles came the 100-meter dash, where first place was taken by Farag, followed by all Griffin opponents. Next up was the 800 meter run, where Rios took first place, beating his opponent Jonathan Vasquez by one second with a time of 2:03.29. 

After the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash came the 300-meter dash, where the boys dominated again, taking first, third and fourth place with Noah Nguyen, Ethan Nguyen and senior Thomas Hartman ending with times of 41.52, 46.10, and 47.00 respectively. The Barons showed the most strength in their short distance runners, as Farag took first place in the 200-meter dash once again with a time of 21.91. 

Moving on to the boys pole vault, junior Viet Le took the first place spot with a height of 4.26 meters, beating his opponent Aaron Lin by 0.15 meters. In the long jump, Wang took the win with a distance of 6.22 meters, with sophomore Maxwell Do close behind in second place with a distance of 5.96 meters. Next was the triple jump, in which Do beat his opponent by 0.42 meters with a distance of 13.16 meters, with Wang coming in third and junior Noah Nguyen taking fourth with distances of 12.34 meters and 12.33 meters respectively.

The final event for boys varsity was a win for the Barons, as junior Tanner Barlow took first for the shot put with a distance of 13.33 meters. Overall, boy’s varsity won 10 out of 16 events and ended with a total score of 67-69.

GIRLS

The girls had similar results to the boys as they won a majority of their events but not all. The varsity girls events began with the 100-meter dash, with sophomore Charlotte Bui coming in first with a time of 12:37 and senior Lily Huynh following close behind in second with 12.82. The 200-meter dash results were the same as Bui came in first with 25.89 followed by Huynh with a time of 26.38. Following the 100- and 200-meter dashes came the 400-meter run, where freshman Addison Carl came in first with a time of 1:01.76. 

Carl continued to make wins for the Barons as she also took first for the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.29. The Lady Barons showed strength in their track events during the meet, as they struggled to earn wins in the field events against the Griffins. 

The Barons next track and field meet will take place on Wednesday, Apr. 1st against Huntington Beach at Newport Harbor High School.
