Fountain Valley High School’s (FVHS) flag football varsity team (7-13 overall, 1-7 league) took the win against Los Alamitos High School (LAHS) with a score of 19-14. For the first time in three years, the Lady Barons were able to take down the Griffins in an electric game. The Barons put up an exciting show with three touchdowns for this week’s ASB Game of the Week.

Key players included quarterback Addison Carl, receiver/defensive player Emma Ioane, and receiver Ava Daley, with Carl throwing impressive throws throughout the games and Ioane and Daley proving crucial with multiple catches.

Early in the first quarter, the Griffins got on the scoreboard with a quick touchdown, yet Carl tossed an underhand pass to Ioane for a touchdown quickly after to tie the game.

Later in the first, Carl used her quick mind and swift footwork to control the offensive side of the ball. She was able to dominate the running game, gaining many yards from her aggressive runs. Impressive plays came from multiple receivers, including junior Trinity Le and junior Ashlee Tran.

On LAHS’ next drive, they started strong with a first down, which didn’t last long as the Griffins’ quarterback threw an interception to Ioane and gifted the Barons a big advantage.

A few quick first downs for FVHS led to the Barons being only a few yards away from their second touchdown of the game, with Carl running past two Los Al defenders into the endzone for the touchdown.

To start the second half, LAHS came out with a fight, wanting to strike back on the scoreboard. After a few long yard gains, the Griffins were bound to score, yet Daley’s interception changed the tone of the game, resulting in a change of possession.

The Barons fought this drive with a good running game from Carl and Daley, yet after getting about halfway down the field, the drive ended after a failed 3rd down.

Back on offense, the Griffins quickly got down the field. LAHS was able to get most of their yards from a few big heaves, and as they got right up to the goal line, the Griffins’ QB connected on a short pass to bring the game within a few points.

With the Barons’ determination, the next drive became their most important of the game. A few hard-fought first downs led to FVHS getting down the field quickly. A big pass put FVHS in scoring position, and with everyone on their feet, Carl threw a pass to Daley to secure the lead of 19-14.

FVHS players stormed the field after the clock timed out, signaling the end of the fourth quarter of play. The Lady Barons’ parents described this electric game as “the Bell Game of flag football.” The game was one of the top performances of the girls’ flag football season, and the team will be sure to repeat it again in their next match against Fairmont Prep this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
