On Dec. 16, 2025, Fountain Valley High School Girls’ Water Polo (0-1) faced off against the Western High School Pioneers (0-0). Although the Lady Barons put up an intense fight in the water, they were ultimately overpowered, ending the game with a final score of 2-10.
The first quarter started with the Pioneers coming in hot. A minute in, the Pioneers bypassed the Baron’s defensive line and scored a clean corner.
With 56 seconds left on the clock, the Pioneers scored another goal, ending the first quarter with a score of 0-2.
At the start of the second quarter, the Pioneers were quick to secure the ball; however, their efforts proved unsuccessful as the ball ricocheted off the top of the cage. As the game progressed, the Barons and Pioneers both made failed efforts to secure goals with Barons’ senior goalie Maggie Rogers and the Pioneers preventing various hard-hitting shots. With three minutes and three seconds left in the quarter, the Westerners broke the stalemate with a middle shot.

Just 18 seconds later, a foul was called after senior Izzabella Penor pushed off a Pioneer defender in the midst of gaining leverage over the ball; the Pioneers converted the resulting penalty shot.
A Pioneer offender tried once more to generate another goal, but was swiftly stopped by Maggie Rogers. The second quarter ended with a score of 0-4, striking uncertainty in the air for the Barons as half-time commenced.
At the start of the third quarter, putting aside any lingering fear of failing to come up with a goal, the Barons pushed through the Pioneers’s defensive lines. Junior Cameron Bridgers keenly guided some of the Pioneer defenders away from the goal, creating ample space for a divisive assist to be provided to senior Captain Rita Wilton on the left wing. With striking precision, Wilton made a clean shot into the right corner of the cage – awarding the Barons their first goal of the game.

The Pioneers are quick to respond, however, making another quick shot just ten seconds later. For the succeeding time in the third quarter, failed attempts at scoring are made on both sides with many shots just skimming the top of the cage. The Pioneers were finally able to generate an additional goal with just a minute left. The remaining minute of the third period saw no other goals, thus ending with a score of 1-6.
The final quarter commenced with the Pioneers making yet another goal. The Pioneer offenders continued to make multiple aggressive attempts to score, but were thwarted by key players like Bridges.
“Cameron was able to really direct traffic and make sure no [opposing shots made it in]” Coach Gen Fujita said.
Eventually, junior Molly Rogers was able to secure the ball after a key assist by Strange. Immediately spotting an opening in the Pioneers’ defense, she generated a goal with four minutes on the clock, bumping the score to 2-7.

As the fourth quarter came to a close, the Pioneers proceeded to score two consecutive goals. One goal was granted through a penalty shot after Maggie Rogers moved out of bounds to stave off oncoming Pioneer offenders. Finally, in the last nine seconds, the Pioneers made the last goal of the game.
Despite their loss, Fujita is proud of their work on conditioning and improving their drives. He also recognizes Maggie Rogers as a key defensive component.
“Maggie was a force in the cage and was able to block a lot of interesting shots,” Fujita said.
Their next home game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. against the Los Alamitos Griffins.
