On Thursday, Jan. 8, the Fountain Valley High School girls’ varsity basketball team earned a strong win against Newport Harbor, finishing the game with a 59–46 victory. Both teams competed hard throughout the night, but the Lady Barons stayed focused and pushed ahead to secure the win.

The Lady Barons’ success was built on teamwork and composure. The players communicated well on the court, shared the ball and trusted one another in high-pressure moments. By staying active on defense and patient on offense, the team was able to create scoring opportunities and limit Newport Harbor’s chances, helping them maintain control of the game from start to finish.

After the game, freshman Emmy Tran, one of two freshmen on the girls’ varsity roster, reflected on the overall team performance and highlighted several players who played key roles in the victory. Tran emphasized that while individual efforts stood out, the win was ultimately the result of everyone contributing in different ways.

“I think everyone played really well last Thursday, but there were a couple of key players that helped secure the victory against Newport,” Tran said. One of those players was sophomore Truley Nguyen, whose scoring and hustle set the tone for the team. “Truley Nguyen was one of them, since she scored the most points during the game and was always hustling to the ball.”

Tran also pointed to freshman Bailey Dinh’s impact in the paint and on defense. Dinh’s rebounding and aggressiveness created second-chance opportunities and helped shut down Newport Harbor’s offense during key stretches of the game.

“Bailey Dinh was another key player,” Tran said. “She grabbed a lot of rebounds and made good cuts for easy layups. She was aggressive going to the basket, finished strong and hustled on defense to get a couple of steals.”

In addition, Tran highlighted senior Sophie Hsieh’s role in keeping the offense organized and flowing. Hsieh’s awareness and decision-making helped the team stay calm and balanced throughout the game.

“I think Sophie Hsieh also did really well because she facilitated the plays and knew when to slow things down on offense and hustle on defense,” Tran said. “She also moved really well without the ball to get open and create opportunities for her teammates.”

With contributions coming from across the roster, the Lady Barons were able to work together and maintain their momentum. The win continues their strong run this season as they look ahead to their next matchup.

The Lady Barons will play their next home game on Tuesday Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. against Los Alamitos High School, where they hope to extend their winning streak in front of their home crowd.
