The Barons took two extra innings to close off the series with Edison last week but they did it. The varsity baseball team won their series against Edison two games to one; winning the first and third game.
The last game of the series took a full nine innings to complete, but the Barons were able to finally score their first eventual game winning run in the ninth inning. Michael Hickman (’15) ran from second to home after a hit to right field by Dillon Persinger (’14). The Barons went on to win the game.
Tanner Brown (’12) started and pitched the entire game keeping the shutout. With the help of a strong Baron defense he only allowed five hits in nine innings. Brown also notched four strikeouts on the day.
In the two games prior to the last of the series the Barons traded a win and a loss. The Barons won the first game without much contest, 7-2.
In the second game of the series the Barons fell hard at home losing 0-6. The ball constantly dropped into center field conceding hit after hit for the chargers. The Barons went through a total of four pitchers in seven innings during the game. Joseph Lorenger (’13) pitched the first two innings allowing a run in both the first and second innings. The Barons could not answer the charger attack and would fail to do so the rest of the game.
Looking to keep the deficit at a manageable distance, head coach Ron LaRuffa subbed in Monty Plattner (’13) on the mound in the third inning. However the Barons fell even further down allowing two runs in the inning.
The Barons chances diminished further in the sixth inning. Nic Yang (’14) came into the game as reliever for Plattner. A combination of wild pitches and stolen bases allowed runners into good scoring positions and the Chargers were able to capitalize and convert two runs in the inning. The inning ended 0-6 and the Barons chances were all but done for the win and the series sweep.
With the series win the Barons are now 1-1 in series play but a poor record of 4-6 still looms over the team in the standings and keeps them in fifth place. This week the Barons take on the Vikings who astoundingly sit second behind the Griffins; who surprised the league with a sweep over Huntington Beach last week. The Barons already are down one game in the series so both games must be won this week.
The Barons took a strong step forward winning the series over Edison but the ball club has three more series to get into playoff contention, and they must win at least two of three to have a chance.
