Last Friday, the Fountain Valley track team faced off against some of their top rivals at the Sunset League Prelims, which they hosted at Huntington Beach High School. Although the conditions were humid and ranged within the high 80s, the Barons fought strong and the majority of the team easily qualified in their event to move on to finals for the next week.
Top performances came from all events, including from the shot put team, who swept on the girls frosh-soph level.
“I was really impressed with our results on frosh today,” said Brenda Erickson (’14), who is part of the girls varsity shot put and discus team. “We got first, second, and third, we probably dominated and that makes me really excited for what’s coming next year after we leave.”
The sprinters were led by Lisa Rastogi (’16), who ran one of the fastest times of the day for her events by winning the girls frosh-soph 100-meter dash in 12.78 seconds, also the third fastest time on all levels, and dominated once again in the 200m by running a 26.98 to win third place on the frosh-soph level.
“In the 100-meter, the freshmen did really well today, Lisa Rastogi ran a 12.78 which is a PR for her, and overall I think we got Lauren [Delgadillo] (’14) and Crystal [Eckman] (’15) to qualify for the finals for the 100m,” said Lindsay Chiang (’14) who ran in the girls varsity 100-meter. “And overall I think we’ve been having a good season and hopefully girls varsity will win next week against Los Al and we can win Sunset League.”
In addition, one of the hurdlers, Elias Ghazlani (’16) smashed his personal best in the boys varsity 300m hurdles with a time of 41.11 seconds, and the fifth best time of the day for his event.
“One good performance was Elias, he got 41.11 [seconds], which is a really big PR for him, he improved by a second and a half, which is a really good time,” said Patrick Huynh (’16) who also competed in the boys varsity 300m hurdles as well as the 100-meter dash.
The Barons are excited to compete next Thursday at the Sunset League Finals, and after a dominant season, are satisfied with what they’ve accomplished.
” I think we’re pretty well-rounded and have a lot of good people,” Chiang continued. “This is a good year to end on.”
