Boys volleyball played strong against rivals Edison and Los Alamitos at their first Sunset League games of the season, but unfortunately lost.
Although varsity put up a solid fight, they lost to Edison 2-3, scoring 19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 13-25, and 11-15 in each respective game. They lost 0-3 to the Griffins with close scores of 21-25, 23-25, and 23-25, respectively.
During their game against Edison, outside hitter Will Thibodeau (’16) played smart and earned the team several points with his tough serves and solid passing. Brandon Crowe (’18) scored key points with his blocks and with his focus at the net.
“The passing went well, however, I believe the placement of the ball was not accurate enough,” said J.V. assistant coach Brandon Ha (’15). “We were very sporadic and not very level-headed.”
Despite a close first game, the boys brought it back with two wins but their performance was outmatched by the Chargers.
On the second night, middle blocker Hunter Todd (’15) earned the team crucial points with his kills and blocks, while libero Luke Jacobsen (’15) was quick on his feet and handled hard balls with ease. The team received many hard-driven balls from the Griffins, and were able to keep the ball in play.
“The passers did a good job back row, but we were not very focused on the court because of the Loud Crowd,” said Ha. “We let our emotions take advantage of us, and the level of serving wasn’t where it should have been.”
Students and ASB came out to support the boys, and the Loud Crowd remained positive the entire night as the Barons fought point for point.
Throughout both games, the team seemed able to communicate effectively and work together as one cohesive unit. Although opening their season with two losses against their biggest rivals is a damper, the team still has many more games to turn the tides in their favor.
“I think that we did a great job and played good,” said Todd. “[We’re] hoping for a fun and great rest of season and [to] get some wins.”
